Cotton Fiber Measurement
Count is widely used term in garment industry when it comes to define fabric construction and yarn specification (weight per unit length or length per unit weight) those are made using staple fiber like cotton. If you are working in fabric sourcing, merchandising, fabric testing and quality and technical department, you know this term very well. Fabrics (knits or woven) are made of yarns and filaments. Count is one of the primary specifications of cotton yarn.
Count (cotton count) is a measuring unit of yarn linear density. In Indirect measuring system cotton yarns are measured in Count or cotton count.
Cotton Count is defined as the number of 840 yards length of yarns in one pound. It means that the number of yarns of 840 yards length required weighing one pound. For example, a 30 count yarn means you need 30 yarns of 840 yards length to make it one pound weight.
In cotton count (indirect yarn numbering) system, higher the count of a yarn is, finer the yarn. For example, a 40’s yarn is two times finer than a 20’s yarn.
The yarn count of a regular T-shirt made of single jersey fall in between 20 to 40.
Synthetic Fiber Measurement
For man-made or synthetic fibres and yarns are measured in Tex and denier.
Denier is a unit of measurement that is used to determine the fiber thickness of individual threads or filaments used in the creation of textiles and fabrics. Fabrics with a high denier count tend to be thick, sturdy, and durable. Fabrics with a low denier count tend to be sheer, soft, and silky.
In terms of fills, in order to be considered a “microfiber” the fiber must be less than 1 denier, which is extremely fine. This gives the fill its airy weight, downy feel, and soft, silky texture. In comparison, a human hair is 20 denier, whereas Standard Fiber’s microfibers are typically 0.9 denier or less.
Fiber Denier Measurement
The denier is obtained by weighing 9,000 meters of yarn or thread, expressing the result in grams. Thus the denier is a measure of linear density expressed in terms of grams per 9000 meters. Since a yarn with a higher denier has more mass per unit length than a yarn with a lower denier, it is thicker and tougher, provided that both yarns are made of the same kind of material. For this reason, the term “denier” has come to mean the size of a thread or yarn.
